Seattle City Light’s leadership in the promotion of energy conservation won a Green Globe Award from King County today.
King County Executive Dow Constantine presented City Light’s Conservation Resources Director Glenn Atwood with the award during an Earth Day ceremony at Westlake Plaza.
“Seattle City Light has been a proven partner with us for many years in our ongoing efforts to reduce costs, save resources and improve services to the people we serve,” said Executive Constantine. “By working together and saving energy, we are benefitting our community and our environment too.”
The Green Globe Award is the most prestigious environmental award presented by King County. They are presented every two years to organizations and community members who are protecting and improving our environment.
“Energy conservation helps our customers lower their costs and reduces our community’s impact on the environment,” Atwood said. “Seattle City Light is committed to continuing that work to support sustainable energy decisions.”
City Light has supported energy conservation for more than 30 years and is recognized as a national leader. The utility pursues conservation as its first resource of choice for meeting new customer energy demands. Avoiding the need to purchase more power on the open market or build a new power plant helps City Light maintain some of the lowest electricity rates in the country.
Since that work started in 1977, City Light has helped its residential, commercial and industrial customers save more than 16 million megawatt hours of electricity, which translates to about $800 million in customer bill savings.
Seattle City Light is the 10th largest public electric utility in the United States. It has some of the lowest cost customer rates of any urban utility, providing reliable, renewable and environmentally responsible power to nearly 1 million Seattle area residents. City Light has been greenhouse gas neutral since 2005, the first electric utility in the nation to achieve that distinction.
