A team of 38 Seattle City Light volunteers and family members, along with employees from McKinstry, are working side by side to make a significant difference in the life of one customer as part of Rebuilding Together Seattle’s Spring Rebuilding Day on April 27.
The energetic group will split into teams to make some needed repairs and improvements to the home in the Genesee neighborhood of Seattle.
Every year, on the last Saturday in April, Rebuilding Together Seattle partners with its sponsors and more than 1,500 volunteers to repair 25 homes in one day. Rebuilding Together Seattle is committed to bringing volunteers and communities together to help low-income homeowners live in warmth, safety, and independence. That mission is in line with Seattle City Light’s employee volunteer program, which focuses on assistance to low-income customers and environmental stewardship projects.
During the Rebuilding Day, City Light’s volunteer team will help complete critical repairs, modifications and energy-efficient upgrades at no cost to the homeowner.
Inside the home, teams of volunteers will install a structural support beam, replace a water heater with a high-efficiency unit, repaint two interior rooms, remove debris, repair and replace plumbing in the kitchen and bathroom, and install new appliances. Outside teams will remove blackberry bushes and other outgrown plants, mow and trim the yard, and rebuild a deteriorating vegetable garden.
