David Fishman, a material supplier at Seattle City Light, was recently honored by the International Photography Awards with honorable mentions for eight photographs in the 2012 competition. His stunning photographs “Passiflora maliformis,” “Amorphphyllis bulbifer,” and “Darmera peltata” were all honored in the Nature – Flowers category, while his five-photo series entitled “Growth stages of the ‘Arisaema Taiwanensis’” was honored in the Nature – Other category.
Fishman earned that distinction out of 18,000 submissions from 104 countries. He has worked for the City of Seattle for 34 years, with the last 14 years at City Light.
“I have always enjoyed nature and the out-of-doors,” Fishman said. “I wanted to bring home with me the beautiful sights I saw on various hikes, mostly of different wilderness areas. So I bought a Nikon.”
About 10 years ago, as he noticed his photographs becoming increasingly detail-oriented, Fishman began researching macro-photography — very close-up photography — and micro-photography, which involves microscopes. He got in touch with experts in the field and familiarized himself with the sophisticated graphic software used by macro- and micro-photographers.
Passion for photographing unique flowers and plants has driven Fishman’s photography for the past 10 years. He has received numerous local and national awards from art, photography, and garden shows and competitions.
