Lighten Your Load: Saving Energy and Money in 2024

As of January 1, 2024, City Light has implemented new electricity rates. These new rates were adopted by the Seattle City Council in the fall of 2022 and include two automatic surcharges.

While we know rate increases can be a burden, we’re here to empower you with information, resources, and support. Our goal is simple – to provide you with ways to cut waste and save money on your bills.

When enough of us reduce our electrical load, this helps the entire service area as well. So, let’s look at how you can lighten your load – not your wallet – as we navigate the rate increase together.

How to reduce your electricity bill right now

Most customers will see about a 10% bill increase. This means a typical residential customer will see about $18 more on a bimonthly bill. The good news is that you can easily save that much or more without making permanent changes to your space.

Here are several low- or no-cost ways to do that:

  • Avoid relying on space heaters. Running a space heater all day for a month can cost you $120! Better to limit your use, bundle up, and enjoy a hot beverage.
  • Decrease shower time. Even just a few minutes less can conserve a lot of energy and hot water.
  • Unplug unused devices. Phantom energy consumption is real! Unplug chargers and devices when they’re not in use.
  • Use smaller kitchen appliances. Opt for the microwave, electric kettle, slow cooker, Instant Pot, or toaster-oven instead of firing up the big oven.

How to save electricity and money in the long run

The above tips are great ways for each of us to affect our bills right now. But how can we reinforce these energy-saving practices in the long run? Adopting energy-efficient habits is a group effort. Tell the people you know and live with about them! Here are a couple examples:

  • Program your thermostat. Set it two to three degrees lower in winter and higher in summer. Every degree makes at least a 2% difference in your heat use.
  • Run appliances only when full. Whether it’s the dishwasher, washing machine, or dryer – wait until they’re full for maximum efficiency. Make sure to clean your dryer filter before each use too.

Finally, if you’re able to make some energy efficient upgrades to your home, consider doing so. We have a selection of rebates on energy efficient appliances and heat pump water heaters available. Make sure that when you’re buying a new appliance or entertainment system you look for both the Energy Star logo and compare the yellow “EnergyGuide” labels to find the most efficient product that meets your needs.

By adopting these simple practices, we can collectively lighten our load and mitigate the impact of the rate increase on our energy bills. Your actions matter, and together we can make a difference.

Now, let’s take this a step further and help us help others! Share these tips with your friends, family, and neighbors. Let’s spread the word and lighten the load together. Resolve to cut waste and save money with us in 2024.
