Seattle City Light is proud to announce that our Chief Operating Officer, Mike Haynes, has been honored with the prestigious Pamela E. Klatt Award at the Northwest Hydroelectric Association’s (NWHA) annual conference in Seattle. This award recognizes individuals who have made lasting contributions to the hydropower industry through exceptional leadership and service.

Mike Haynes’s dedication to hydropower

Mike’s career in the energy sector spans over four decades, with more than 30 years dedicated specifically to hydropower.

“I spent time in the mountains around scenic rivers and lakes, enjoying the landscape while rebuilding 100-year-old hydropower equipment,” Mike recalled. “I saw the brilliance of our industry’s founders, which I’d only known through textbooks and periodicals. I developed an appreciation for the longevity of this equipment.”

His path has been shaped by a steadfast commitment to advancing energy production while balancing environmental and cultural stewardship.

Some key highlights of his impressive career include:

  • Transitioning a Native Alaskan village from diesel power to a 700-kW hydroelectric plant at Tazmina Falls in 1997.
  • Serving as a former National Hydropower Association Board Chair, advocating for sustainable hydropower solutions on regional and national levels.
  • Leading City Light teams for nearly 25 years, including his role as Interim General Manager and CEO in 2023.

At City Light, Mike has been instrumental in major projects such as the continued efforts to relicense the Skagit Hydroelectric Project, an effort he calls “one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences” of his career.

A leader who inspires

Mike is widely respected for his ability to balance the needs of excellent water management, energy production, and community and environmental preservation. His colleagues often describe him as a collaborative problem-solver with a gift for inspiring and connecting people.

Shelly Adams, Senior Capital Projects Coordinator, shared, “The most incredible thing [Mike] has given me is the inspiration to be my best. I meet and hear from people across the U.S. who love and respect Mike for all that he has done for the hydropower industry.”

Whether championing new policies or guiding complex projects, Mike’s thoughtful leadership continues to shape the future of hydropower in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Congratulations to Mike Haynes on this well-deserved recognition!
