City Light completes EV charger network transition

Seattle City Light’s electric vehicle (EV) chargers have now been transitioned to the ChargePoint charger management system from Shell Recharge’s software.

In December 2024, Shell Recharge (previously Greenlots) announced it would discontinue supporting its Shell Sky software system on third-party commercial electric vehicle (EV) chargers starting on April 30.

Shell Sky was the operating system for 72 of our public EV chargers. The discontinuation of this system meant we would need to transition our chargers to a new system in a short time frame to prevent any EV charger downtime.

After a successful pilot phase in February, the decision was made to move forward with converting our EV chargers to the ChargePoint system, which is already in use at our Shoreline and Burien EV charging stations.

In March, the City Light project team, along with a group of contractors and technicians, began transitioning the remainder of the chargers to ChargePoint with the goal of minimizing impact on users. The final charger was transitioned to ChargePoint in June.

Project highlights

  • Transitioned 14 DC fast chargers and 58 curbside Level 2 chargers across 37 locations to the ChargePoint system.
  • Completed the pilot phase of our Curbside Level 2 Charger Project with the launch of our latest EV charging station at 3658 Dayton Ave N in Fremont.
  • Completed the project in less than five months despite many challenges and unknowns.
