Electric Vehicles Take Center Stage at Seattle City Light’s Third Annual Electric Car Guest Drive

Seattle City Light’s third annual Electric Car Guest Drive took place on Saturday, August 23. The event brought together curious drivers and cutting-edge electric vehicles (EVs) for a day of hands-on exploration. Despite rising temperatures later in the day, the event drew steady crowds and delivered impressive results.

Test drive success

The event generated significant interest, with 160 total test drives completed throughout the day. Participants had the opportunity to experience a diverse lineup of EVs, including the following:

  • Hyundai Ioniq 5
  • Volkswagen ID.4
  • Kia EV6
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E
  • Subaru Solterra
  • Ford Lightning truck
  • Tesla Cybertruck
  • Tesla Model Y
  • Tesla Model 3
  • Polestar 2

Positive response from participants

The event’s impact was clear in the feedback collected from attendees. Out of 66 participants surveyed, 45 indicated they are very likely to consider an EV for their next purchase. This represents more than two-thirds of respondents expressing strong interest in making the switch to electric.

Education and information drive interest

Beyond the test drives, attendees sought information about the practical aspects of EV ownership. Many participants asked our staff about:

  • Available EV incentives
  • Home charging installation requirements
  • EV charging infrastructure options

This engagement demonstrates that potential EV buyers want comprehensive information to make informed decisions about EV ownership.

Supporting Seattle’s electrification goals

Seattle continues its mission to electrify transportation as part of broader sustainability goals. The City aims for 90% of all personal trips to use zero-emission transportation by 2030. These goals align with Washington’s targets:

  • 66% of new car sales should be zero-emission by 2030.
  • All new vehicles sold should run on clean energy by 2035.

King County’s position as the 9th highest rate of EV adoption per capita in the country reflects the region’s commitment to electric transportation. With 168,850 electric vehicles registered in Washington in 2023 — a 43% increase from the previous year — the trend toward electrification continues to accelerate.

Looking forward

As more customers choose EVs, we continue to enhance public charging infrastructure and strengthen the power grid to meet growing demand. We are also exploring new technologies for energy storage while maintaining affordable and reliable service.

Events like the Electric Car Guest Drive play an important role in this transition, giving everyone the chance to experience EVs firsthand and get the information they need to make the switch to electric transportation.
