Seattle City (spot)Light: Alan Bach, Senior Power Analyst

The Basics

Division: Resource Planning & Analysis team in the Power Supply Business Unit

How long have you been at City Light? Since November 2022

Tell us about your role. My work helps support our Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), the utility’s roadmap for meeting energy needs over the next 20 years. This involves evaluating what new resources, conservation measures, and demand response we need to meet changes in our load. The IRP process includes City Light’s Demand-Side Management Potential Assessment, which informs the Customer Energy Solutions team on what conservation and demand response targets to set for the next two and four years.

Background

Hometown: Woodinville, Washington

Alma mater: Cal (University of California, Berkeley)

Discipline/Trade of study: Environmental engineering

Tell us about your family/pets: Since moving back from California I’ve been living with my parents and sister.

Just for fun

What’s one thing that has surprised you about working at City Light? How welcoming my colleagues have been. People in other states say we have the “Seattle freeze,” but I haven’t experienced that since moving back to Washington.

What’s your favorite book and why? “The Silmarillion” by J.R.R. Tolkien. I like mythology, and Tolkien’s book is a mythos that is written in a much more coherent style that is somewhat less archaic than most mythology books.

What is the best meal you have ever eaten? I love pizza, so Mama’s Too in NYC.

What was the last song you listened to? “High Horse” by NMIXX. But if I were to recommend some of their music to people, I’d choose songs from their most recent “Blue Valentine” album.

What’s one item on your bucket list? Design my own board game.
