The Washington State Senate has confirmed Seattle City Light Superintendent Jorge Carrasco for a second term on the Seattle Community College District Board of Trustees.
The approval took place during the recently concluded legislative session. Trustees at the state’s community and technical colleges are community leaders appointed by the Governor and referred to the Senate for approval.
Board members serve five-year terms. Carrasco joined the Board in 2009, replacing former Trustee Rajiv Shah, who left the Board to join the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C.
The five-member Seattle Board of Trustees also includes Board Chair Constance W. Rice; Vice Chair Gayatri Eassey; and Trustees Tom Malone and Albert Shen. Trustees are responsible for overall policy and leadership in meeting the current educational needs of their communities.
The Seattle District is the second largest higher education institution in the state, serving more than 50,000 students every year at Seattle Central, North Seattle and South Seattle Community Colleges; Seattle Vocational Institute; and four specialized training centers across the city.
Seattle City Light is the 10th largest public electric utility in the United States. It has some of the lowest cost customer rates of any urban utility, providing reliable, renewable and environmentally responsible power to nearly 1 million Seattle area residents. City Light has been greenhouse gas neutral since 2005, the first electric utility in the nation to achieve that distinction.
