Seattle City Light is making improvements to the Broad Street Substation to increase the reliability of the regional transmission grid. City Light has developed a preliminary design for the improvements and will be holding an open house to present the design.

The design includes a proposal to vacate a small portion of the permanently closed Broad Street and Seattle requires public benefits in exchange for the loss of use of the public right-of-way. City Light will ask participants for feedback on a proposed set of public benefits.

Project background: Broad Street Substation system improvements are necessary to meet energy demands of Seattle and our growing region, and to reduce the likelihood of widespread power outages. Working in conjunction with similar equipment being installed at the Denny Substation, the Broad Street Substation will more reliably deliver power to customers. The new equipment at the Broad Street Substation will include inductors, capacitors and gas insulated switchgear. This combination of equipment will help reduce power outages by controlling and balancing the electrical load that travels through the regional grid.
