Seattle City (spot)Light: Rob Mercer, Hydroelectric Maintenance Machinist

The Basics

How long have you been at City Light? Since June 2017

Division: Generation

Tell us about your role: My main role as a hydro machinist at the Skagit Hydroelectric Project is to maintain, repair, and rebuild hydroelectric generators. There is a lot more to it than just generators though. Our crew maintains all mechanical equipment for three dams, three powerhouses, and the town of Newhalem. Along with my machinist responsibilities, I am an active member of the Skagit Technical Rope Rescue Team and occasionally serve as a tour boat captain on Diablo Lake.

Background

Hometown: Rockport, Wash.

Alma mater: Concrete High School

Discipline/Trade of study: Millwright

Tell us about your family/pets: My wife, Rohanna, and I have two boys, Ian, 13, and Jojo, 11. We also have two English bulldogs, Jabba and Mando, and two goats, Tiger Woods and Serena Williams (the GOATs, greatest of all time).

Just for fun

What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend?

If I’m not out on the water or on the golf course, you’ll probably find me chipping away at my never-ending honey-do list.

What do you admire most about your younger self?

My younger self had an uncanny ability to grow hair on the top of his head. I really admire that.

What is your favorite local restaurant?

By default, Rockport Bar and Grill. It’s the only restaurant in town.

What can you talk about for hours?

Haha!!! I’m so socially awkward that I can barely introduce myself, let alone talk for hours. If you were to ask my wife, she would probably tell you how tired she is of hearing about the 2018 Super Bowl Champs, the Philadelphia Eagles.
