On August 14, we held a ribbon-cutting event to announce the opening of Metaline Falls Portage Park! This new 10-acre day-use park in Metaline Falls, Washington, combines accessibility, local history, and natural beauty into one remarkable space.
A memorable gathering
The ceremony welcomed around 50 attendees, including State Representative Andrew Engel, who joined local residents, Seattle City Light staff, and other key stakeholders. Kris Lepine, Senior Capital Projects Coordinator at City Light, served as the emcee, expressing heartfelt gratitude to all who helped bring this project to life. Dawn Lindell, General Manager and CEO of Seattle City Light, and Michael Baumgartner, Congressional Representative of Washington’s 5th District, also delivered inspiring speeches during the event.

Why this park is special
Metaline Falls Portage Park is more than just a recreational space. It holds historical and cultural significance. Located on the site of a former power plant, the park is part of City Light’s comprehensive efforts to uphold protection, mitigation, and enhancement measures as part of the Boundary Hydroelectric Project’s Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) licensing agreement.
“This park symbolizes the balance of history, culture, and modern accessibility. It represents a commitment not only to honoring the past but also creating opportunities for current and future generations to appreciate this special place,” said Dawn Lindell.
The National Register of Historic Places lists this site for its legacy, including its significance to the Kalispel people, who once used the area as part of their traditional fishing routes.
What you’ll find at the park
We designed the park so everyone can enjoy it. Here are its key features:
- Accessible amenities: Parking and restrooms that are inclusive for all visitors.
- Picnic spots and scenic views: Elevated viewpoints provide breathtaking views of Metaline Falls and the river canyon with picnic areas available to take in the sites.
- Portage trail: A 1,600-foot paved trail with a restored ramp for easily crossing Sullivan Creek’s steep banks.
This park serves as a space for relaxation, connection, and exploration. You can enjoy outdoor activities, connect with neighbors, or simply relax and take in the views. It not only provides locals and visitors with opportunities to engage in outdoor activities but also strengthens ties within the community.

Reflecting on the day
The ribbon-cutting event celebrated the collaborative effort behind the park’s creation and invited attendees to explore the beautiful space firsthand. Guests were encouraged to walk the portage trail, enjoy the panoramic views, and reflect on the site’s cultural and historical significance.
As Kris Lepine expressed, the success of this multi-year project would not have been possible without the partnerships and support from the design-build team, community members, City Light staff, and permitting agencies.
