An efficient heat pump water heater can cut your water-heating costs by 50 percent.

Heat pump water heaters are the most energy-efficient water heaters you can buy and you can get one free by combining Seattle City Light’s $500 rebate, the $300 federal tax credit, a $200 discount from GE and a $200 instant rebate from the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA).

The GE and NEEA discount/instant rebate is available on the GE GeoSpringTM 50 gallon heat pump water heater through May 29 and sold at Lowes, Sears,  Seattle Home Appliance and other retailers.  The discounts and rebates are applicable to the water heater. Installation costs and taxes are additional.

Heat pump water heaters work like a refrigerator, but in reverse. While a refrigerator pushes heat from inside the unit out to the air around it, a heat pump water heater uses fans and an evaporator to pull warmth from the surrounding air and transfers it to water in the storage tank. Because it uses the warm, ambient air temperature to do most of the work, it is a very efficient way to heat water, saving up to 50 percent on water heating costs.

The best location for a heat pump water heater is in an unheated space such as a garage or unheated basement, with an average year-round temperature of 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

While the GE and NEEA discounts expire May 29, Seattle City Light’s $500 rebate continues through this year and is applicable on other heat pump water heater models that are on Seattle City Light’s qualified product list.
