Seattle City (spot)Light: Amy Sen, Industrial Hygiene Strategic Advisor II

The Basics

How long have you been at City Light? I started in October 2022. I’m two months shy of my one-year anniversary.

Division: Safety, Health and Wellness

Tell us about your role. As an industrial hygiene strategic advisor, I wear many different hats at the utility. I supervise two talented individuals, and this year my team is focused on revising hazard communications designed to ensure chemical safety in the workplace. I create and update policies, ranging from ergonomics to respiratory protection. I am also a trainer for several safety courses. A key part of my role is to ensure employees are equipped with the knowledge and tools to conduct their work safely. This involves using a combination of data and regulatory standards to drive decisions. The best part of my job is listening to employees’ concerns and trying my best to help address issues.

Background

Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif.

Alma mater: UCLA for both my bachelor’s and master’s degree

Discipline/Trade of study: Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and a Master of Science in Environmental Health Sciences with a focus in Industrial Hygiene

Tell us about your family/pets: It is just my husband, Daniel, myself, and our two-year-old Siamese cat, Stella. Stella runs the household.

Just for fun

What’s one thing that has surprised you about working at City Light? The people. Everyone is down to earth and just amazing to work with.

What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend? Hiking. I have always loved the outdoors and enjoy the rush of getting to the top to see the views.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? Pay my bills because I am a responsible adult. Then buy a house for my parents.

What is the one item you can’t live without that needs electricity to operate? My cellphone. Girl needs to stay connected.

What’s your favorite movie genre and/or all-time favorite movie? The “Harry Potter” series. If that doesn’t tell you how geeky I am, I don’t know what else will.
