Seattle City (spot)Light: Peter Mendez, Electrician Constructor

The Basics

How long have you been at City Light? I’ve been with the City of Seattle for 15 years and with City Light for 11 years.

Division: Network, Stations, Metering and Shops

Tell us about your role. My job as an electrician constructor is to maintain, repair, replace and/or construct all equipment in a substation, from wiring in panels to assembling a giant transformer bank.

Background

Hometown: I was born in Dallas, Texas, and raised in Lynnwood, Wash.

Alma mater: I attended Lynnwood High School and went into trades after graduating.

Discipline/Trade of study: I did roofing, interior/exterior painting and concrete foundation work.

Tell us about your family/pets: My family is everything to me! I’m married with a blended family of four kids ranging in age from 8 to 21! We have two dogs, Gunnar, a Goldendoodle, and Danté, a full Golden Retriever.

Just for fun

Which City Light value do you align most with and why? Safety! We all want to go back home to our families who we’ve worked so hard to provide for, and safety being number one is the best way to see that through.

What is the one item you can’t live without that needs electricity to operate? I mean, honestly, I’d do fine without electricity. But if I had to choose, I guess it’d be the refrigerator. Something has to keep the food fresh.

What is your favorite local activity? I’d say hanging out, being with friends and family. It doesn’t matter where we go.

If you could be anyone for a day, who would it be and why? I would say myself. It may sound crazy, but I like myself. I’m an honest man who loves his family, and I’m learning more and more everyday how to navigate this thing called life. I’m not perfect, as no one is, and I don’t carry myself as such. I care about people sometimes too much and that’s OK. You got me and I got you.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In 10 years, I see myself so much wiser and more knowledgeable than ever! And it’s all thanks to hard work, dedication and my friends and family who supported me and got me through.
