In March 2017, Seattle City Light will continue supporting Advanced Metering services throughout the utility’s service territory by replacing existing utility poles with taller poles, which will host wireless utility data collection equipment. The new poles will be 70 feet tall, which is about 20 feet taller than the existing poles.
This project is part of the communications network to support Advanced Metering, which will automate meter reading and enable enhanced services.
Throughout the month of March, City Light crews will be replacing poles in the following areas:
- Queen Anne (Galer Street)
- West Woodland (NW 46th Street)
- Whittier Heights (8th Avenue NW)
- Ravenna (NE 50th Street)
View the March 2017 Utility Pole Upgrade maps for approximate construction work areas. Additional maps will be added on the Utility Pole Upgrade website as the project progresses into other areas within City Light’s service territory.
There are no maintenance power outages planned for this work. Some traffic and parking impacts are expected in the immediate work areas. Crews will be careful to maintain access to driveways.
Daily work hours are from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In most instances, the work to transfer existing equipment and install the data collection equipment can be completed in one day.

Hello:
One of the areas listed for pole replacement was identified in an inconsistent manner.
The post shows the following:
Queen Anne (Galer Street)
Ballard (NW 46th Street)
Whittier Heights (8th Avenue NW)
Ravenna (NE 50th Street)
The area you have identified as “Ballard” should instead be identified as “West Woodland” if you are to identify “Whittier Heights” separately. Both are Ballard neighborhoods.
Best,
Sue Pierce

Why don’t you explain to all of us the reason for being 20 million dollars over budget.. You have no explanation
Or why SCL feels it is OK to guess at our bills, then when a customer calls with a complaint they are fed lies (no access or not enough meter readers)
SCL’s mismanagement and just plain incompetence is appalling.

Sue,
Thank you for sharing this. We appreciate the neighborhood pride in all areas of the city, including West Woodland. Please accept our apologies for the inconsistency.

The Advanced Metering program is on budget and on schedule for completion at the end of 2018. As for estimated meter reads, those happen when our meter readers are unable to access a meter for some reason, such as a locked gate or a dog in the yard. One of the advantages of Advanced Metering is that it will eliminate most estimated reads.
